Sector Y — Deep Space Combat
Last updated: June 2026
Overview
Sector Y is the second stage on the hard route, reached by saving Falco and flying through all seven stone arches on Corneria. Unlike corridor stages, Sector Y uses all-range combat — Fox can fly freely in three dimensions through a vast debris field filled with Andross's warships and fighter squadrons. This stage serves as both a combat showcase and a critical routing gate for the true ending.
Your hit count at the end of Sector Y determines the next destination: 100 or more hits continue the hard path to Aquas, while fewer than 100 drops you to Katina on the medium route. This makes Sector Y one of the few stages where scoring directly controls routing.
Route Triggers
Sector Y's routing depends entirely on your hit score:
- Aquas (100+ hits): Maintaining aggressive combat performance keeps you on the hard route. ROB confirms the path to Aquas when the hit threshold is met.
- Katina (below 100 hits): Falling short of 100 hits demotes you to the medium route. This ends any true ending attempt for the current playthrough.
There is no hidden warp or secret exit — pure combat score determines routing. Shogun, the stage boss, appears at the end regardless of hit count, so defeat him while ensuring your total remains above the threshold.
Boss Strategy
Shogun: A massive combat robot that transforms between a star-shaped fighter formation and a central mech body. Shogun's star formation splits into five independently attacking segments before recombining. During the split phase, destroy each segment with charged shots — they are individually vulnerable.
When Shogun recombines into its central form, it fires sweeping laser beams and launches missile volleys. Barrel roll through laser sweeps and loop over missile clusters. The central core glows brightly during attack cooldowns — focus charged shots on the core during these windows. Smart bombs are effective when Shogun's segments are clustered together during the recombination animation.
Medal Tips
Sector Y requires 150 hits for the medal — separate from the 100-hit routing threshold. Since you need at least 100 hits for hard route continuation anyway, the medal is naturally achievable on a hard route run if you push to 150. Destroy enemy formations aggressively with charged shots and smart bombs.
All-range mode means enemies approach from all directions — check behind you regularly for incoming fighters that contribute easy hit points. The debris field contains hidden supply rings and enemy clusters in less obvious locations. Explore the full three-dimensional space rather than staying on a single plane.
Wingmate Advice
Wingmates are essential for reaching the 100-hit routing threshold on Sector Y. Falco, Slippy, and Peppy all contribute kills that count toward the team total. Let them engage freely while you focus on high-value formations and boss damage.
However, do not passively rely on wingmates — if you personally score too low, you may fall below 100 even with team contributions depending on how hits are distributed. Lead aggressive attacks on clustered enemies to guarantee your share of the total. Peppy's all-range experience shows here; he performs reliably without needing rescue.
Switch 2 Remake Notes
Sector Y's all-range mode feels natural on Switch 2 with gyro and mouse aim options available in co-op. The 100-hit routing gate displays no in-game counter, so experienced players track score mentally or listen for ROB's route confirmation at stage end. Practice in Training Mode to learn enemy spawn patterns and maximize hits before attempting a hard route campaign run.
