Meteo — Asteroid Field

Last updated: June 2026

Overview

Meteo is Star Fox 64's iconic asteroid belt stage — a twisting corridor of space rock where Fox McCloud weaves between tumbling boulders while Andross's forces ambush from every angle. This second mission on the easy route and medium route follows a standard completion from Corneria. The stage is famous for its hidden warp rings, which offer both bonus hit score and an alternate route to Katina.

Meteo's dense asteroid clusters make it one of the best scoring stages in the campaign, with a 200-hit medal threshold that rewards aggressive play. The stage ends with the Meteo Crusher boss — a mining robot that attempts to grind your Arwing between its jaws.

Route Triggers

Meteo presents a clear binary routing choice:

  • Fichina (standard): Complete the asteroid field normally without passing through all six warp rings. This continues the easy route to Fichina's Landmaster defense mission.
  • Katina (warp): Fly through all six golden warp rings scattered throughout the field. After the sixth ring, Fox warps directly to Katina, beginning the medium route and skipping Fichina entirely.

Warp rings appear as rotating golden hoops embedded in asteroid clusters. Each ring grants a hit bonus when passed through. On a medium route attempt, plan your flight path to intersect every ring without backtracking — the stage scrolls forward continuously and missed rings cannot be revisited.

Boss Strategy

Meteo Crusher: A giant mining machine with two crushing arms and a vulnerable central body. The Crusher attempts to grab your Arwing between its pincers — barrel roll or loop to escape the grab. Its primary attack pattern involves extending both arms and clamping down, then retracting to reveal the body core.

Shoot the central body with charged laser shots when the arms are extended. Smart bombs deal significant damage during the retract phase. The Crusher's grab attack is telegraphed by a mechanical whirring sound — react immediately with a loop maneuver to avoid damage. On Expert Mode, the grab deals enough damage to destroy an Arwing in two hits.

Medal Tips

Meteo's 200-hit medal is achievable with consistent charged shot use on asteroid clusters. Destroying asteroids with charged shots often yields multiple hit points because fragments count individually. Smart bombs in dense clusters can add 20+ hits in a single detonation.

Warp rings provide substantial bonus hits — even on an easy route run where you skip the warp to Fichina, flying through rings you encounter naturally helps reach 200. Prioritize grouped enemy formations over individual fighters. Wingmate kills count toward the team total, but lead the formation to prevent Falco and Slippy from stealing cluster bonuses you need.

Wingmate Advice

Slippy is particularly vulnerable on Meteo because the narrow corridors limit evasion space. When Slippy calls for help, clear the asteroids and enemies blocking his path before he takes damage. Falco's aggressive flying style works well here — he destroys many targets independently, contributing to the team hit count.

Peppy warns about incoming asteroid waves and enemy formations. Follow his calls to preemptively target threats before they reach the formation. In co-op mode, assign one player to handle rear threats while the other focuses on forward scoring.

Switch 2 Remake Notes

The Nintendo Switch 2 remake preserves Meteo's original warp ring positions while adding clearer visual cues — golden rings now pulse with a brighter glow. Warp ring hit bonuses count toward the 200-hit medal, so medium-route players benefit doubly from collecting all six rings. If you accidentally enter a ring while aiming for Fichina, there is no way to undo the warp — plan your route before entering the stage.

Related Missions and Routes

Standard completion leads to Fichina. All six warp rings route to Katina. Compare both paths on the easy route and medium route walkthroughs, or use the route map to visualize the branch.

Six warp rings are hidden throughout the asteroid field. Flying through all six warps you to Katina on the medium route.

Meteo requires 200 hits — one of the highest thresholds in the game, though warp rings provide bonus scoring opportunities.
