Katina — Ground Assault
Last updated: June 2026
Overview
Katina is a medium-route stage reached from Meteo via warp rings or from Sector Y with fewer than 100 hits. The mission is an all-range ground assault against a massive Saucerer mothership deploying invasion forces across the Cornerian Army base. Bill Grey, a bulldog fighter pilot from the Cornerian Army, joins Star Fox for this battle — one of the few stages featuring an allied NPC pilot.
Katina's open battlefield and mothership boss make it a highlight of the medium route. The stage has only one exit — complete the mission to proceed to Solar — so you can focus entirely on combat and medal scoring without routing concerns.
Route Triggers
Katina has a single exit with no branching:
- Solar (automatic): Defeat the Saucerer mothership to proceed to Solar. There are no hidden warps or alternate paths from Katina.
Entry to Katina comes from two sources: the six warp rings on Meteo (primary medium route entry) or scoring below 100 hits on Sector Y (hard route fallback). Both paths play identically once you arrive.
Boss Strategy
Saucerer: A flying saucer mothership that hovers over the battlefield deploying ground troops and fighter squadrons. The Saucerer periodically opens its underside to reveal a glowing energy core — this is its only vulnerable point.
When the core is exposed, focus charged laser shots on the center. The Saucerer closes its hull after several seconds, so maximize damage during each opening. Smart bombs fired upward into the open core deal massive damage. Between core phases, destroy deployed ground units and fighters for hit score while waiting for the next opening. The Saucerer's area attack — a sweeping energy beam across the battlefield — is telegraphed by a charging glow. Break formation and fly to the edges to avoid it.
Medal Tips
Katina requires 150 hits for the medal. Ground targets — tanks, troops, and structures — litter the battlefield and provide steady scoring opportunities. Destroy ground units during Saucerer core phases when aerial targeting is unavailable.
Bill Grey's kills do not count toward your personal hit score, so do not rely on him for medal progress. Focus your shots on high-value targets: grouped ground units, fighter squadrons, and Saucerer core hits. Charged shots on the core during each opening phase contribute significantly to the total.
Wingmate Advice
Star Fox wingmates perform well on Katina's open all-range battlefield. Falco excels at chasing fighters across the wide combat zone. Slippy may need rescue when ground anti-air fire targets him — destroy SAM batteries proactively.
Bill Grey flies independently and provides covering fire against peripheral threats. He occasionally calls out target locations with radio chatter. Peppy coordinates the assault on the Saucerer — follow his calls to focus fire during core exposure windows. Keeping all wingmates alive is essential for medal eligibility and Expert Mode progress.
Switch 2 Remake Notes
Bill Grey remains exclusive to Katina in the Switch 2 remake, making this stage a unique encounter on the medium route. The all-range camera gives a wider view of the Saucerer's core openings — use this to position charged shots before the hull closes. Katina's open terrain is ideal for practicing all-range movement before the harder Sector Y and Area 6 battles on other routes.
Ground targets respawn in waves during the Saucerer fight — cycle between clearing ground units and shooting the exposed core to maintain steady hit accumulation. Bill Grey draws fire from peripheral enemies, giving you safer windows to focus on the mothership.
